On 19 December 2024, as part of the SMALEI Digital Academy, SMALEI and YUVA hosted a webinar discussing how adult education institutions are essential in raising awareness and driving involvement in sustainability. The session, organised by TKNIKA, featured Eduardo Alzola, Circular Economy Expert at Galdakao Hospitality School, Iratxe Garrachon from Calasanz Centre, Adriana Zagar and Leire Ganboa, environmental education teachers at EASO Politeknikoa and Tartanga LHII.

Raising Awareness through Circular Economy and Sustainability Education

Eduardo Alzola shared how Galdakao Hospitality School incorporates circular economy principles into its curriculum, teaching students practical ways to reduce waste, recycle, and make sustainable choices in hospitality. “We empower students to make environmentally conscious decisions that will have a long-term impact on the industry,” he said. Iratxe Garrachon also highlighted the sustainability initiatives at Calasanz Centre, which focuses on practical workshops and community engagement to inspire action. “Sustainability isn’t just a concept—it’s about tangible actions,” Garrachon noted, while Adriana Zagar and Leire Ganboa from EASO Politeknikoa and Tartanga LHII shared their work in environmental education, including hands-on projects like clean-up campaigns and biodiversity lessons. “Environmental education empowers students to make a real difference in their communities,” said Zagar. All panellists emphasised the importance of student-led, participatory initiatives in fostering environmental responsibility.

The panellists also highlighted the challenges of overcoming resistance to eco-education. Iraxte Garrachon suggested that small, accessible actions, such as composting or energy-saving tips, can engage people without overwhelming them. Alzola agreed, emphasising that the key is patience and persistence in promoting sustainable practices.

A Call to Action

In closing, the panellists stressed the need for adult education institutions to make sustainability a core value. “Sustainability is essential for the future,” Alzola concluded. “We must equip our learners with the knowledge and tools to make a meaningful impact.”
